Crisis of Tradition: How Pope Francis’ Decision Undermines the Foundations of the Catholic Church

Recently, Pope Francis approved a document allowing Catholic priests to bless same-sex, that is, homosexual or lesbian couples. This has sparked discussions about the Catholic Church, especially in the context of its relationship to biblical teaching. According to the Holy Scripture, homosexual relations are considered unacceptable. For instance, in the Book of Leviticus (18:22), it says: “Do not lie with a man as one lies with a woman; that is detestable.”

Apostle Paul in the first chapter of his letter to the Romans describes homosexual relations as “shameful lusts” and “deception”. In the sixth chapter of the first letter to the Corinthians, he asserts that homosexuality contradicts the Kingdom of God. Thus, the question arises: can what the Bible condemns be blessed?

However, Pope Francis takes a position contrary to biblical teaching and the teachings of his predecessors. For example, Pope Benedict XVI in 2008 called for saving the world from homosexuality and transsexualism, comparing them to ecological disasters. Therefore, Francis’s actions raise questions about the infallibility of the Pope and the conformity of his teachings to traditional Catholic doctrine.

The official Catholic catechism has always condemned homosexual acts as “intrinsically disordered”. However, Pope Francis’s decision seems to contradict this teaching. This has caused disagreements within the Catholic Church, especially among conservatively minded members. Some bishops and cardinals openly criticize this decision, while others support it.

Pope Francis’s decision may also lead to disappointment and an exodus of parishioners from the Catholic Church, especially among the conservative-minded. Lately, Pope Francis has been under pressure from liberal circles within the Catholic Church, especially from Germany, demanding the recognition of homosexual unions.

In the context of these events, the question arises about the advisability of maintaining close relations between the Russian Orthodox Church and the Roman Catholic Church. The Russian Orthodox Church had previously suspended relations with other Christian denominations that made decisions in favor of blessing same-sex unions. In light of recent events, a reevaluation of these relationships may be necessary.

In conclusion, Pope Francis’s actions could lead to serious upheavals in the Catholic community and provoke discussions about the conformity of his teachings with fundamental biblical principles.
